NJOY Survey Identifies Who Uses Electronic Cigarettes and Why

A statistically valid survey has revealed who is using electronic cigarettes – the nonflammable, microelectronic devices that mimic with remarkable accuracy the process and sensations smokers seek and enjoy – and why.

“There has been a great deal of attention paid to electronic cigarettes in recent months, and much of it has left out the voice and actual experience of the consumer,” said Jack Leadbeater, CEO of Sottera, Inc., which owns and operates the NJOY brand (www.njoy.com), the company which funded the research that offers a 95% confidence level at +/- 3.2% accuracy. “The survey results shed some much-needed light.”

The survey of NJOY customers determined that the profile of the average person is 44 years old and smokes tobacco at a rate of 25.6 cigarettes (1.28 packs) per day, which is 84 percent higher than the national norm for tobacco smokers of 13.9 cigarettes (.70 packs) per day.

“As we’ve always said, our customers are long-time committed tobacco smokers who enjoy what they do and are seeking an alternative for places where smoking is not permitted or where it is frowned upon,” said Leadbeater, adding that 96% of survey participants purchased NJOY for their own use, while 4% purchased it for someone else who smoked tobacco.

Despite the notion that the escalating cost of tobacco cigarettes may drive down tobacco use, just 10.9 percent of survey participants said that the rising cost of tobacco and the fact that electronic cigarettes are more affordable was their leading reason for initial purchase.

“This statistic, along with others, suggests there will be those who choose to smoke, no matter the cost. The next era of public policy around the topic of smoking should embrace products that don’t contain many of the harmful ingredients found in tobacco cigarettes,” added John Wiesehan Jr., President and CEO of TSC Group, the U.S. distributor of NJOY, citing Centers for Disease Control data that shows that tobacco use has hit a plateau in recent years.

When asked to rank the benefits of NJOY, people cited, among other things:

  • “no more lingering tobacco odor”
  • “closely replicates a true smoking experience”
  • “freedom to smoke anywhere.”

Since the introduction of NJOY products, consumer acceptance has been excellent and more than 200,000 committed smokers in 50 countries have begun using it. NJOY offers committed smokers of a legal age the chance to smoke with the pleasure and satisfaction of traditional smoking, without many of the problems associated with tobacco cigarettes.
